How did you come up with a concept like BBQ Wisdom?
In the recipe page on my SlapYoDaddyBBQ.com website, I shared some BBQ tips which I called BBQ wisdom. When TLC asked me for promo material to launch the Season Premier of BBQ Pitmasters which featured our team, I gave them these grilling tips which they posted on their website. I received lots of positive feedback from fans of the show and that was the genesis of an idea for a line of tees since I couldn't find any tees on the Internet that I wanted to wear while grilling. I figured there were many folks who felt the same way so why not share my BBQ wisdom and passion with everyone. When I get off work Fridays, I like to wear my favorite tee for the entire weekend until Sunday evening. I'm very particular about tees I wear as comfort, fit, and durability are key qualities I look for. It took many months of searching and testing tees from around the world to source the tees which met my exceptionally high standards. I finally found one from India that I was satisfied enough to use in my BBQ Wisdom line of clothing. Once you pick up these tees and feel their thickness and velvet softness, you'll be immediately hooked! I was! Who is Slap Yo Daddy BBQ?
Slap Yo Daddy BBQ is the BBQ team of TLC’s Pitmaster's Head Cook, Harry Soo. Preparing a bucket list of wishes to do before “kicking the bucket,” he started competing in 2008. And the rest, as they say, is history. Awarded Best New California Team in 2008 and California Rookie Team of the Year ROY in 2008, they made history and earned a rare KCBS achievement of winning Grand Champion with 1st place in all four meat categories in the 2009 Way Out West BBQ Championship. This barbeque team has proven that they know their stuff. They’ve received countless awards in addition to these, some of which include, 2010 Grand Champion at the Ultimate BBQ Showdown East vs West, 2009 Grand Champion at Bakersfield Biggest Baddest BBQ State Championship, 2009 Grand Champion at Qu’en for Kids BBQ Cookoff State Championship, 2008 Grand Champion Sunburst BBQ Cook-off, 2009 Reserve Grand Champion at West Coast State Championship, 2008 Reserve Grand Champion at Ground Hog Cook Off, 2009 Reserve Grand Champion at the 162 team Great American BBQ in Kansas City, all along with 20+ first place finishes in various categories and many 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishes. Clearly, Slap Yo Daddy BBQ are masters at the grill, so you’ll just have to check them out for yourself. What was your BBQ Wisdom creation journey like? The idea for a line of tees simmered from 2007-2010 until I discussed the idea with Janet and Hank, owners of Planet Earth Print from Brea in Orange County, California. They are a top tee company (Stache, ES Boardshop, Maui & Sons, etc.) and handle my team shirts. They really focus on making shirts with eco-friendly equipment, ink, and cleaners. Their motto is "Earth matters" and we all need to do what we can, individually and collectively, to protect it for ourselves and our grandchildren. Patrick Carlson, my team logo designer from Valdosta, Georgia, joined and our collaboration journey began. It was a lot of fun and it took many weeks to come up with 20+ designs and the dozen selected for our 2010 product premier. We begin with an idea which is translated into sketches, followed by proof drawings, and the final. Here are some sketches that show the progression from idea to final.
